Some people, as some environments, have a way to make us feel comfortable. A familiar acquaintance of some sort where we feel like confiding in them and sharing baring our soul. Well I feel just that way about this New York city apartment and its gorgeous owners, Laura & Diego Garcia.

Polished and chic, this apartment in Upper East Side is a reflection in good taste with a touch of “pizzazz”. The casual personalities of the owners shine through the glass top tables and desks with accessories such as photographs taken by friends and guitars lying around for moments of sudden inspiration.

Even the dressing area has been addressed in a very stylish yet practical manner. No upholstered ottoman here, but instead tons of storage, cubbies, and mannequins to prepare the next day’s outfit. You have to love that!

And what to say about the shoes closet??? Jealousy pretty much sums it up for me!

But the show stopper of this magnificent NYC abode is by far the baby’s nursery which features artwork of Elizabeth Taylor by Russell Young. The light grey paint opens up the room and gives it neutral palette on which the hot-pink painting can really pop.

Once more, here is a clear example of how it is possible to break every rule in the book and yet end up with a cohesive yet edgy décor. The jury is in and it is an unanimous 10/10!

Ish & Chi

Un adage bien connu des « foodies » de ce monde, cette expression s’applique selon moi tout aussi bien à la décoration!

Comme une recette savoureuse, un décor réussi est un amalgame d’éléments divers : des couleurs harmonieuses, un mobilier aux proportions justes, un éclairage à plusieurs niveaux, des accessoires bien choisis. Une pincée de ceci et de cela et hop le tour est joué!

Comme en cuisine, certains choisissent de décorer en suivant la recette à la lettre, en respectant les règles établies en fait de symétrie et de style, pendant que d’autres laissent libre cours à leur imagination en dégustant, du bout du doigt, le produit de leur labeur.

Je fais partie de la seconde catégorie! J’aime un décor qui évolue de façon organique au fil du temps et des souvenirs accumulés. Cela ne veut pas dire que notre maison est un assemblage de bibelots et de pièces dépareillées, je suis quand même une fervente décoratrice, mais plutôt qu’elle est à notre image…décontractée et confortable.

Un décor réussi commence, comme une recette, avec un ingrédient de base autour duquel gravitent ensuite les autres. Un sofa, une table, une carpette même. Par la suite, je suggère toujours de prendre du recul et de s’imaginer vivre dans la pièce. «Et si je voulais lire dans ce sofa, il me faudrait une lampe d’appoint n’est-ce pas? » ou encore «Si j’ai des invités, vais-je tous les « corder » sur mon seul sofa ou si je pense prévoir des chaises ou de fauteuils additionnels? »

Spring is finally here! Our Canadian snow banks are slowly melting away. The snow boots give ways to swanky “billy boots” instead and you could not see me happier!

Some crafty DIY and a pop of colour

With the arrival of the longer days and warmer weather, a feeling of change always inhabits me too. It starts slowly with a little Spring cleaning…that always ends up in a massive overhaul of cupboards and bags full of barely used things to the Salvation Army. I am not compulsive…I merely like my living spaces to be streamlined and airy…even with 3 kids around.

So what’s in store for this coming season? Well, for me, it will be in the details. The tiny attentions that I never either had time or the budget to address. A comfy throw on the couch, bright cushions, and long and bare linen drapes are a good place to start.

Natural fibers and textures are a sure value too if you are in the market for new pieces of furniture.

And because our warm season is SO short here in the land of the caribou and the igloos (oh well let me indulge in ALL the clichés!) I will indulge in an island-style net over our comfy bed. A very contemporary décor might not be optimal for such an accessory, but in my century old home…it will OH SO nicely!

Et toi Missaa que penses-tu du retour du Fluo?

Ahhh le fluo. Il faudrait que je fouille un peu dans les albums photos qui prennent la poussière chez mes parents, histoire de retrouver ce cliché de moi à 4-5 ans, portant des leggings (avec élastiques) à motifs dignes d’une soirée sous substance illicite, t-shirt extra-large avec tête géante de Mickey en prime… Le tout version fluo, bien entendu. Y’avait de quoi rendre doublement aveugle n’importe quel aveugle, croyez-moi.

Bref, je crois avoir été trop traumatisée dans mon enfance pour pouvoir adhérer  pleinement à cette tendance qui revient tranquillement depuis quelques saisons. Toutefois, je ne suis pas fermée à l’idée d’en ajouter quelques touches à ma garde-robe et je compte bien opter pour des items estivaux aux couleurs vives tels que présentés pour les collections Printemps-Été 2011 des plus grands créateurs.

Mais le fluo FLUO, le vrai, pur, digne des habits de skis quatre couleurs ou de mes chaussures d’éducation physique au primaire? Je trouve ça joli sur les passerelles, mais ce n’est pas pour moi!
