Boho Chic

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

Home Decor Reflection 1

A blank canvas

Yesterday I spent the day at the hospital prior to a benign surgery. A hundred years old building, with endless corridors and bland decors, a place full of births and deaths, illnesses and miracles. As I sit here in the belly of the beast, I cannot help but to do some soul searching.

Home Decor Reflection 2

I thought about the chaotic speed of my daily life, the seemingly countless hours I spend chatting with people who I have never met online in lengths of 140 characters. I think also of my chosen profession as a décor and web entrepreneur and at the way I am in no way saving lives. Is this all frivolous and superficial I ask?

Home Decor Reflection 3

After all isn’t the need to house oneself part of the primary needs of the “Maslow Hierarchy of Needs”? On the same quantitative scale, isn’t the need to accomplish oneself professionally and socially a mandatory milestone in attaining self actualization? And yet…I am not saving lives.

Home Decor Reflection 4

As I sat there sipping a cup of warm tea I looked around and saw the miracle of life happening under my eyes. A group of weary doctors in scrubs talking about their latest surgery and the techniques they used to probably save this person’s life, a young mother speechlessly gazing at her newborn son (undeniably a son dressed from beanie to slippers in nautical blue), a man sitting beside me giving his grown son life lessons…maybe his last ones.

Home Decor Reflection 5

And as I reflect, I cannot help but to think that although I do not save lives I hope to certainly help make some better on a daily basis. Whether it is the artisans, creators, and retailers to whom I give visibility through my online directory, or the people that read my blog posts and attend the conferences I spend countless hours preparing, or even the design community with whom I enjoy exchanging on the social media platforms…I hope that I somehow make a difference.

Because at the end of the day…and as long as we have health… isn’t it that what’s most important to make a positive difference in someone’s life?

Nhow Hotel Berlin: Junior suite

“Cosmopolitan business travellers, international jet-setters, party animals and the hottest bands – what unites them all is a love of music.  That’s why we have our own nhow music manager and a number of Nhow staff members from music colleges. There’s also our integrated high-end recording studio with panoramic views of Berlin – in cooperation with the legendary Berlin Hansa-Studios. Let’s rock it.” – Nhow Hotel Concept

Sprawled along the Spree river, where stood the now ancient line between East and West Berlin, is the Nhow Hotel designed by Karim Rashid and his team. Modern and colourful only begin to describe this feat of architectural magnitude and magnificence.

“My vision engages technology, visuals, textures, color, as well as all the needs that are intrinsic
to living in a simpler less cluttered but more sensual environment. design touches us on every level,
and design can continue to define and shape our dimensional interior environments and create
new progressive human behaviors and new languages. I always question whether the physical world
is as experiential, as seductive, as connective, as inspiring, as personalizable, and customizable
as the digital world. that is what I tried to achieve with nhow hotel berlin by making a space that
coexists with the data-driven digital infostethic world.”

In the recent years we have seen, in popular magazines and websites,  a wave of quiet conformity, neutral shades and plush fabrics. Such a conformity could not be further from Rashid’s designs and for that exact reason I believe that his creations stand the test of time and be passed on to future generations of design lovers.

Un appart qui a de la gueule!

Appartement Moderne Inspiration 1
