Contemporary Kitchen Inspiration

Kitchen Inspiration: Atlanta Homes Magazine

If we were to tell the love story of a kitchen…how would it go? Once upon a time, there was an empty shell. White walls and bare floors, sad and lonely.

Then one day came a buyer with a vision of true love. Cabinets and counter tops she saw in parts and pieces, would be a perfect match for this lovely home. A perfect little white and charcoal grey number with not too much and not too little of anything…as a certain Goldy Locks would agree.

Our owner measured twice and had cut once (notice the “had” part…one has merits and others are thankfully handed out) and confirmed that this match was made in design heaven!

Then came the dust and the power tool, their blossoming relationship was making a tumultuous debut. But as everything that comes up must come down eventually, the dust did settle and then, amidst the remnants of cardboard boxes and sawdust, emerged a lovely kitchen. Oh it was lovely indeed! It was fresh and bright, compact and useful at the same time. Our owner even noticed a glimmer in the counter’s eye…or was it one of her own tears of joy to see this committed and truly well appointed relationship?

6:15am, the alarm clock…our weary owner woke up? Was it all just a dream…or an anticipation of what is to come? A few more days miss, said the contractors…a few more days.

White Walls and a Little Canadiana

There are many downsides to a full on gut job renovation. But despite the dust, the bad plumbing surprises (can we even qualify them with such a term?), and the discomfort of living out of a suitcase; there is a glimmer of hope and light at the end of the tunnel. The realm of possibilities that opens up as the reno moves along is so exciting!

I have said this before and still believe it to be a universal truth; the décor of a home must acknowledge the home’s features and structure. We are guests within the walls of our home and I have always felt I needed to show respect for its history and it’s stature standing before me. That being said, if the home you live is brand new, well then you are the history maker. Kudos!

In our current project, and because our overall square footage is trim and slim, I have decided to go Scandinavian with a palette of warm, for the common areas and kitchen, and cool whites, for the bedrooms. 1920′s Montréal duplexes are known for their high ceilings, crown mouldings that are 20 inches wide, and gorgeous floors. They are also known for their narrow corridors leading to every separate rooms and their lack of light due to small windows. Fact: Did you know these small windows were actually designed as such as a means of cost saving during the cold winter months? A fountain of useless information, I tell you!

The owner before us had the insight to tear down some of those walls and to change the windows, so that was our starting point. To that bright and luminous canvas I have embraced my love for Canadiana! Yes, I now have moose heads in every room! Kidding aside, I will be introducing very rough and rustic pieces into an otherwise sleek and mid century inspired décor.

Maybe my hodge-podge of styles will make the hair rise on some of your heads, I like to believe that is is simply a natural evolution of one’s personal style and the accumulation, over time, of cherished pieces that collide in one room. Hey isn’t Undecorate a book turned movement that is very trendy these days? Well here you go, I rest my case. :o)
