Growing Pains
Sunday, August 28th, 2011My daughter is seven today. A tall chestnut eyed and blond haired girl stands before me. Seven years ago it was a tiny (not so tiny really at 8.5 pounds) little girl that I was cradling in my arms for the first time.
As I mused today over the years that have gone so quickly, and the growing pains that we encountered in the process, I also realized how she was a little person of her own the minute she was born. As much as I have tried to influence her tastes or her temper, her true nature politely shone through.
Her first room was an old dusty pink with chocolate brown accents. I remember having spent days painting a plaid pattern onto one of the walls. A toile de Jouy custom bedding completed the ensemble to my great delight. There was no “baby theme” here and yet the room felt cozy and inviting to my newborn daughter.
Her last room was papered in a gorgeous oversized peony motif. Delicate and bold I felt it reflected her love for princesses and ballerinas without falling into the packaged themes sold in big box stores.
But it is her new current room that seems to be her favorite. I know because she told me so. A mixture of white walls, colorful paper lanterns, a salvaged wood desk, and a starry sky inspired chandelier.
The vintage bedding and the repurposed dresser seems to add to the charm of the bedroom that is only GREAT because she gets to share it with her 2 and a half years old sister. No matter how big the growing pains might get, I know for sure that she will always have a friend sleeping in the bunk right underneath hers. That, today, makes me smile!
