Growing Pains

Children Bedroom Scandinavian Design Inspiration

Scandinavian design children bedroom: A Scandinavian design children bedroom via Sköna Hem

My daughter is seven today. A tall chestnut eyed and blond haired girl stands before me. Seven years ago it was a tiny (not so tiny really at 8.5 pounds) little girl that I was cradling in my arms for the first time.

A Scandinavian style little girl's room, pink and lovely

As I mused today over the years that have gone so quickly, and the growing pains that we encountered in the process, I also realized how she was a little person of her own the minute she was born. As much as I have tried to influence her tastes or her temper, her true nature politely shone through.

A Scandinavian inspired boy's playroom. Cheerful!

Her first room was an old dusty pink with chocolate brown accents. I remember having spent days painting a plaid pattern onto one of the walls. A toile de Jouy custom bedding completed the ensemble to my great delight. There was no “baby theme” here and yet the room felt cozy and inviting to my newborn daughter.

Scandinavian design children bedroom: Playful and colourful

Her last room was papered in a gorgeous oversized peony motif. Delicate and bold I felt it reflected her love for princesses and ballerinas without falling into the packaged themes sold in big box stores.

But it is her new current room that seems to be her favorite. I know because she told me so. A mixture of white walls, colorful paper lanterns, a salvaged wood desk, and a starry sky inspired chandelier.

A girl's room that is almost all grown up!

The vintage bedding and the repurposed dresser seems to add to the charm of the bedroom that is only GREAT because she gets to share it with her 2 and a half years old sister. No matter how big the growing pains might get, I know for sure that she will always have a friend sleeping in the bunk right underneath hers. That, today, makes me smile!

From New York with Love: a vision in grey

New York Loft Inspiration: A living and work area bathed in soft light

In a world where we are surrounded with color it is sometimes peaceful to live without it. Some might argue that gray is a color and that white is the addition of all colors, but when all is said and done gray and white are as neutral as it gets when it comes to home décor.

This mirror is stunning, making the whole room immense

This NYC apartment is the epitome of this monochromatic palette. The magic of this house lies somewhere between the light peeking through the windows, the height of the ceilings and the intricate play of vintage and new furniture.

Neutral Colors Inspiration: On a grey backdrop, the pink vases pop.

Black elements are used to punctuate the space and make statements, a little bit like the black notes on a piano filled with white keys.

Used as art, these twin mirrors make a statement

I am particularly partial to the mirrors that reflect the light and add character to the walls devoid of any artifice.

New York Loft Inspiration: Open shelves kitchens are a huge trend all over the world

Another excellent reason why I love New York so much. Enough said…I rest my case.

Vintage Decor Inspiration: In White the entryway sets the tone for the rest of the house

Linen sack pillows are a symbol of the casual home

I love a blank canvas on which to express one’s style. Whether through the use of colourful accessories or simply with the use of gorgeous salvaged architectural pieces, a white colour scheme does the trick.

Pieces of furniture are weathered and beautifully vibrant

My personal two cents on the matter: If you are to choose bare walls go for a white that has intent, not the contractor’s basic chalky white that is dull and mat.

Simple Home: The only shadow in this all white decor...the floor in a dark stain

“At first glance, the simple home may appear to be devoid of colour, but that is to dismiss the subtleties of an understated, more natural approach to the subjets.” – The Simple Home

Antiques have been painted white to reflect the ensemble

Although some purists might argue with me about the “no-no” factor of painting antique furniture, I still believe that it is more current to paint furniture, even antiques, than to let them sit in the basement because they do not fit your style.
