I have a chair fetish!

Mid Century numbers, classic bergères, Bent wood Thonet’s, leather club chair or iconic Chippendales… I love all chairs. Call that equal opportunity or simple madness, but I love to decorate with chairs!

Chairs have a decorative quality to them that few pieces of furniture can equal. To create order and symmetry beside the fireplace, to fill a small nook with book resting on top, or to furnish the floor space in front of a blank wall, chairs are the most versatile of all.

They are also easily recognizable. Their designs can be easily catalogued by eras and genre, rendering them excellent collectable items that hold their value if not increase it.

That being said, I never shy away from a good reupholstering job in order to bring a vintage chair into the Twenty First Century. Bergère… beware!

Life’s a Beach

Friday, April 27th, 2012

Monday’s post got me a little nostalgic of my beach bum college years back in California when life constituted of a great tan, a little studying and a whole lot of surfing. Beach life was about the waves and the friends, but it was also about the style undercurrent that came with it and that never seemed to completely rub off of me.

Bright hues, soft forms and comfortable textures are synonyms of casual living. Bohemian at heart, guided by the waves and the global tide patterns, surfers are world travellers like few others. The juxtaposition of their travel memorabilia is what really bring this style together for me .

Earth tones and vibrant seashells are great basis of inspiration for creating a laid back and vivacious look.  Let nature be your style guru.

Don’t be put off with mixing colours and art in what will look at first like an in cohesive mix… soon a common thread of inspiration and intention will emerge making it come together.

Going back down memory lane, Kurt Cobain’s Nirvana playing in my yellow “waterproof”  Sony walkman, I remember the youthful and grey side of my beach bum years. Granny Chintz, found at the Salvation Army, was made into cool curtains and bedspreads. Daffodils (made to sew on kids knickers) were the decor of my “left by the previous tenant” melamine kitchen table, which I had hot glued on to make the whole matter less horrible. I don’t know if it is my upcoming birthday that is making me nostalgic or if the trend is here to stay, but I am rekindling in a big way with Chintz, pink, and all things bohemian. Totally rad dude!

Blossoming Relationship

Thursday, April 26th, 2012

It’s been a month already since started this blog, and I love how our relationship is blossoming!

Pardon the pun, but I can’t help it. With all the spring flowers sprouting up, I’ve been absolutely obsessed with freshly cut flowers.

They’re like the earrings to a great outfit, the ballerina flats to a flowing skirt, the timeless accessory that never seems to go out of style…

There’s also a delectable sense of indulgence in cut flowers. They’re totally a guilty pleasure. After all, they serve no other purpose than to smell wonderful and look pretty.

And just in case you need some extra inspiration to indulge, I’ve compiled my four top dos and don’ts for incorporating fresh-cut flowers in your home.

Don’t... Wait for an Occasion
: Break all the rules and get flowers because it’s Monday or because you’re wearing pink shoes. Any excuse is a good one. But whatever you do, don’t wait to get them on our birthday (once a year is not a good flowers-to-home ratio).

Do… Use Blooms to Refresh Your Décor: The personal touches you add to your home décor are what make it uniquely yours. Fresh blooms are a perfect way to bring new life, warmth and lots of personality to a space.

Don’t… Underestimate the Power of Flowers: I may only be a humble design groupie but I believe, in my heart of hearts, that flowers have mood-lifting magic in their delicate petals. I mean, have you ever seen anyone annoyed or sad while arranging or receiving flowers? I rest my case.

Do… Think Outside of the Vase: Get creative! Cut the stems off the blooms and put them in various colorful containers. Anything goes, just as long as it is watertight please!

Do… Learn the Lingo
: If flower names and families are like trying to speak a foreign language for you, here is an alphabet full of blooms, playfully described by Design*Sponge.

When in doubt, pick up a bunch. They’re sure to make your room (and day) pop with cheer!

May 10th: This blogpost was the last I ever got to write for the Design Groupie blog of Sweetspot before it was shut down a week later… I hope you enjoy it.

A Little Place to Call Home

Thursday, April 26th, 2012

Nate Berkus

Hi D&D’ers! Gabrielle from Savvy Home here again for another top 5. You may know that I recently moved into an apartment. Well actually, “moved” is a big overstatement because I have yet to spend a night at my new place. However, I must say it’s coming together nicely. Now that I’ve got a bed, linens and kitchen essentials, I might just make the move official tonight!

But enough with the boring details. What I really want to talk about are my solutions to get around the smaller space and awkward layout my apartment has gifted me. There are many ways to get around living in a small but functional space. In fact, Vanessa was talking about this just yesterday.

One person that embraced this theory the best in my opinion is ex Lonny editorial assistant Ellie Somerville who lives in a tiny Manhattan studio apartment with her boyfriend and her dog! Now that’s commitment. Her apartment is so perfectly well-organized and ingenuous. Somerville is the living proof that compromising on space doesn’t have to mean compromising on style!

Here are the top 5 solutions that applied to my little place, but that will hopefully come in handy in yours as well.

1. X-Benches: My living room is currently equipped with a nice three-seater sofa, a small coffee table and a few accent tables but it doesn’t have the space for additional chairs, let alone another sofa. So in order to create some extra seating and a more conversational space, I’m resorting to a couple of x-benches. They’re small, confortable, stylish and very versatile! I’m planning on getting mine from Ballard Designs: not too expensive and they come in a wide range of fabrics.

2. Room Divider: My apartment has one nicely sized bedroom, but with such an incredibly awkward layout, that I decided use it as a home office and walk-in robe instead. My bedroom is now in another smaller room that opens onto the living room, which is fine because I live alone. That being said, I still want to have the option to close off the bedroom especially when guests are around.

For this I’m getting an upholstered screen that will act as a room divider, and can be folded in or out as needed. The screen offers more privacy than a room dividing bookcase and looks nicer than curtains

3. Gallery Wall: This is not a space saving solution per say, but it’s a great visual effect for small space, especially if the ceilings are high. My living room ceilings are quite high, so a gallery wall will add the illusion of height and draw the attention away from the width and length of the room. It’s a great visual effect that can be achieved with inexpensive art and Ikea or vintage frames.

4. Brass Bookcases: Bookcases are a must for my living room. You will know if you’ve been following my blog how much I love them. That being said, bulky wooden bookcases would only crowd the space. However, brass and glass bookshelves are perfect for filling up a space without crowding it. Glass and lucite are great materials to use in small spaces.

5. Sconces: There isn’t exactly a lot of space on either side of the bed. But that’s not going to stop me from adding two incredibly tiny bedside tables because I love to be able to have a few things lying around my bed and not on the floor: magazines, books, glasses, candles… This leaves no space for bedside lamps so sconces are the perfect alternative to get the same cozy lighting as in a larger bedroom.

There you have it: a few tips that helped me get around my awkward apartment layout. What are your tricks to get around a small space?
