It ain’t over till there’s Flowers!

I really love flowers! For the obvious pretty reasons of course but also for their architectural and decorative qualities. Although this year fashion and home decor trends are on full colour mode (I mean don’t you love the floral jeans out there?) I still find that there are colours and shapes that can only be found in nature.

I had written a blogpost, for the now defunct Design Groupie blog on Sweetspot, about flowers and I remember some of the comments people shared. Just as flowers… these comments uplifted my mood and made me smile.

In terms of using what flowers where in the house, are there any rules? Good question! I am still looking for a scientific response to that but my gut feeling intuitively tells me that there isn’t, except maybe for the fact that really odorant blooms can get a lithe sickening in the bedroom or on the dining room table while trying to enjoy a flavourful meal.

Another great question is whether all types of flowers can me mixed and mingled into a single vase? Well again to that I would that no rule applies and that as long as the visual composition is appealing to you and that the stems are of similar lengths then why not mix them together right?

Whatever the occasion or however streamlined is your decor, there is always room for a bouquet of flowers on a shelf, ledge or table. If minimalism is your style, opt for graphic blooms with vibrant hues. For a more romantic or feminine feel, loose petals or pompoms flowers will work best (think here of hydrangeas and my favourite ranunculus).

So as we celebrate a long weekend here in Canada, I get to bask a day longer than usual at the cottage… marvelling at our garden in full blooms! Have a great day lovelies and why not treat yourself to some flowers today… just saying!

  1. Rudy Reteig Says:

Flowers are lovely beyond any doubt, but I would like to caution using the in bedrooms and other poorly ventilated quarters.
In my opinion there are two ways of keeping flowers in the bedroom
One is live plants with flowers
    Two is as cut flowers
Ok these are two worlds apart. A living plant normally uses the carbon dioxide and releases oxygen.
With cut flowers the process is in reverse. This flowers are rapidly starting to decay producing increasing amounts of carbon dioxide and for those parts under water also methane gas.
The bacteria involved in the process b.t.w using all nitrogen they can find and the process of decay switches increasingly in higher gear. These means still more carbon dioxide and methane are produced. Methane is on top of everything 23 times more aggressive than carbon dioxide, depriving the person sleeping of oxygen which he or she so desperately needs for a good sleep.
My advice: do not use even living plants in the bedroom and most certainly not cut flowers.
