Hi, it’s Gabrielle from Savvy Home here again! This week I want to dissect the room above, which I love because it shows that you can live stylishly in a super-snug space and it provides inspiration and ideas for doing so.

This room is actually a tiny studio on NYC’s Upper East Side and is the home of Matthew Kowles, who’s also the general manager of Charlotte Moss Interior Design. He calls it his “own little suite at the Ritz”. He room was featured in the December 2012 issue of Lonny Magazine.

I divided this feature into two parts so we really see the room from both angles.

1. A famous decorator once said: if you’re going to have white walls, you’ll need a lot of art! The same can be said for small spaces.

2. The TV is camouflaged in the gallery wall and propped on a commode which provides much needed storage.

3. A few green plants makes the room feel more organic and reduces the feeling of being in a white box.

4. The colors are kept neutral: creams, natural woods, with black and animal print accents.

5. An antique chair doubles as a bedside table.

6. This clever book storage doubles as an art installation.

7. When space is limited, wall-mounted lighting is essential!

8. Neutral curtains with embellished trim hides away all the clutter and adds texture to the room.

9. Oversized art adds drama, scale and flair. Suddenly a white box room feels like a gallery.

10. An old wooden desk is modernized by layering it with a glass table.
