Cool & Collected: the Vintage Approach

feminine bedroom with mismatched textured patterns

I saw this bedroom featured on Design*Sponge a couple of weeks ago and my heart skipped a beat. Then I perused the rest of the home’s pictures and I was furthermore delighted.

The layering of textures and patterns cozy things up in the bedroom while the many vintage finds, scattered throughout the house, give it a lived-in feel.

Have a great weekend lovelies and, I am off to the cottage. Also if you are in Québec, don’t forget to participate the Home Depot contest to get a chance to win 5000$ to create your dream patio. The contest ends May 5th so hurry!

Cozying Up The Bedroom

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

Hi, it’s Gabrielle from Savvy Home here again! Days like these are the ones where you just want to crawl up in a ball (or climb in a warm bath) and not move for a week! They are the coldest days of winter. -40 real feel over here. And nothing is better than a cozy room when it’s cold outside.

So crank up the heat, wrap up in your favorite throw blanket, light your favorite candle (mine is a Ralph Lauren Holiday candle – smells like leather, cinnamon and cloves) and find out all about what makes this bedroom by designer Alexa Hampton extra cozy.

As a side note, I’ve actually been in this room last year: it was part of the Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse and let me just say: this room was about 1000x better in person.

1. Trust my words. An upholstered headboard is pure bliss.

2. It’s impossible not to feel cozy in a canopy bed. Traditional or modern. And it adds height to a room.

3. Alexa Hampton pierced the canopy fabric to insert sconces right where you need them: perfect for reading.

4. The bedding is layered: crisp white sheets matched with a fur throw and linen pillows with greek key trim.

5. The gallery wall behind the bedside table adds a sense of history and a layer to the room which feels lived in.

6. This is not your average lacquered walls. It takes about 12 coats to create that lipgloss shine. Celebrity baker Donna Hay talks about the “lickability factor” of icing on a cake, this is the decor equivalent.

7. Who needs 50 shades of grey when you have this perfect creamy warm shade of charcoal?

8. Granted, a silverleafed ceiling is a bit extravagant. But it adds to the cozy luxurious feel of the bedroom.

9. Lots of antiques set in contemporary architecture will give a room a sense of history.

10. The bedside tables and lamp are mismatched, giving a room a more collected look.

What do you think of this room? How did you cozy up your bedroom?

Greyhound

When it comes to grey, I am a hound! Grey creates a modern and cozy scheme, and although this hue serves as a great neutral base to any decor… falling into the gray overload trap is easy to do and can render the whole room rather bland and shapeless. Here are 5 of my favourite tips, sourced from the web, on how to decorate with grey.

1) “To break up the monotony of the color gray in the living room  use  silver, gold, and lots of pattern.” – House Beautiful

Case in point, in this room by designer Tiffany Eastman the patterned rug, striped settee and nailhead detail on the smoky grey couch give the room a dynamic feel.

2) “Think of a room in grey scale (meaning black, white, and everything in between) as you would think of a monochromatic outfit—say, a grey dress. With no further information, you might picture a corporate uniform: dull, austere, and gloomy. But pair that dress with a shimmery, sequined charcoal cardigan, a faded black leather jacket, and a handful of thick silver chains and you have something else entirely, something that takes minutes to decode, rather than seconds.” – Style at Home

3) “If muted (grey) tones are not to your taste, team these pastel (grey) shades with black and white for a daring scheme. Gloss surfaces and art-deco inspired furniture will achieve a truly glamorous look.” – Love Home

4) “Remember, whatever style is on trend today and is catching your eye might not be something you want to live with for years to come.  There’s nothing wrong with taking hints from a store display or a catalog shot, but avoid an overly homogenous look at home by picking your favorite anchor piece from a trusted source and moving on.” – Lonny Magazine

Grey walls and matching grey furniture can seem to be very versatile, but mark my words, you will tire of if faster then it will take you to read “Fifty Shades of Grey”.

5) “Greys are easy to live with. Metallic finishes and mirrors add sparkle and depth to rooms with near-monochromatic schemes. They can magnify accent colors used throughout the space or bring focal-point status to colourful accents.

Use visual and touchable texture to add interest. Use soft, fuzzy pillows, shaggy rugs, and woven baskets to excite the senses. Play with scale by using oversize accessories such as framed artwork or a large urn for drama. And add surprise to a neutral scheme with bursts of color such as orange, lipstick red, or chartreuse. Inject charm with muted pastels.” BHG

I don’t know if it is because I have 3 little munchkins running around my humble abode, but children room design always get me! (OK, I also get misty watching How to Train Your Dragon… but that’s another story!)

There is something quite whimsical about a child’s room. They do not see their decor as we do. Their comfortable bed with matching bedding is for them either a castle or a drifting raft where hungry sharks swim below. Their little colouring desk becomes, in a flash, an English Tea Room where dolls and stuffed animals attend with great ceremony.

As I look at the glossy pages of magazines and the beautifully curated rooms they present, I marvel at how far chilren room design has come. Long gone are the days or Winnie the Pooh (no offence Winnie, your books and movies rock!) wallpaper and marching bedding.

Colour schemes are vivacious and adult like, the textures are soft and curly but also sophisticated and rich. Themes have been left aside to leave the whole floor for ambiances with streamlined or moody decors. I could not be happier!!

And when all is said and done, and we, as parents, have gotten our design fix, I can only marvel once more at the fact that my children still think their eclectic, bohemian vintage inspired bedroom, still makes for a great space ship or camping tent! Let them keep that child heart as long as possible for spying on their “pretend games” is one of my most profound source of happiness!!
