Small Bedroom, Big Style

carrier-co

Hi, Gabrielle from Savvy Home here again! Here’s a bedroom by Carrier & Company, designed for Town & Country magazine for Hearst Designer Visions. This bedroom is set in a small New York apartment, and what I love about it, is that the small space doesn’t compromise the big style present in the room.

This goes to show that you don’t need a lot of space to create an elegant designer style. All you need is a little art, a few antiques, some color and a bit of decor courage.

1. Oversized art can really add dimension to a small room.

2. If using smaller artwork, try to display it in a symmetrical fashion for more impact.

3. An antique armoire can hold a lot of storage and it always looks chic in a bedroom.

4. Don’t forget to decorate the top of the armoire with bigger items like vases and urns or baskets.

5. Chairs are useful in a bedroom to drop some clothes or your purse on, or to stack books and things.

6. In a bedroom, especially one with furniture in front of the window, curtains left open finished with a simple black out shade works like a charm.

7. If you find yourself challenged by your bedroom’s layout, putting the bed underneath the window is totally acceptable. Choose a statement headboard, like this one from Oly Studio.

8. A couple of throw pillows covered in a bold fabric is a simple way to add style to an otherwise all white bed.

9. Don’t hesitate to layer furniture in front of curtains, just pull them away a few inches to leave enough space to open and close them.

10. No space for storing winter throws? Display them at the foot of the bed.

How have you saved space in your bedroom?

See you next week!

A Bedroom Fit for a Lady

Hi, it’s Gabrielle from Savvy Home here again! Yesterday I booked a little summer vacation in Charleston, South Carolina: home of pretty southern belles, charming historic homes and one very talented interior designer named Angie Hranowski.

Her home was featured in the latest Lonny magazine, and it seems to conjure the very charm associated to that beautiful southern coast, specifically when it comes to her soft feminine bedroom.

We could all use advice on how to doll up our bedrooms (or our daughter’s bedrooms at least) so why not take a few tips from her very feminine bedroom?

1. When in doubt, go monochrome. Everything in her bedroom is a shade of soft peachy pink.

2. Lots of windows means lots of full length curtains and ultimately, a softer room.

3. The chrome canopy bed makes reference to the past while being unashamedly modern and masculine.

4. If you have a narrow wall-space between windows, try a vertical row of frames.

5. A large throw at the end of the bed always adds a layer of color and comfort.

6.  Use an oversized rug as an inspiration for your room. This one is by Madeline Weinrib.

7. A vintage light fixture adds charm and a sense of history. It’s much sexier than a generic white fan.

8. Choose a bedside table with an unusual shape and texture for visual interest.

9. Play with the shades in your room when layering your bedding. The gold tones on the bed are reminiscent of the bedside tables.

10. Decorate your bedside table with a lamp, a plant and some books.

There you have it. How would you doll up your bedroom?

See you next week!

My own Personal Neuroses

Friday, April 5th, 2013

bohemian_bright_living_room

What is your greatest fear when it comes to decorating? What makes your stress level climb and maybe even makes you loose precious hours of sleep?

Well I don’t know about you, but for me I used to be somewhat neurotic… First I had a huge fear of making a mistake. Then it was the fear of “is this what people my age ought to have in their home“? And how about the budget anxiety, the nagging feeling of not being able to afford this or that but not wanting to eat any longer sitting on milk crates?

Then something happened… I don’t know if it is the fact that I turned 30 (and then 35) or if it was the birth of my eldest daughter, but somewhere in the past few years a shift happened and all my fears disolved. I realized that there were no Keeping up with the Joneses, that I could stretch my budget miles further if I was willing to look, wait, and use some elbow grease.  I screamed to the world: “Who cares what others think of my home! We LOVE our home and that is all that counts”. OK I did not scream (what would people think), but I sure thought exactly that though.

Well despite the fact that this home here is not ours (I still have yet to make decent non Instagram shots of mine), it reminds me of all the values I hold dear and of the fearlessness that one has to show in order to create a home that truly reflects who they are… in a modern vintage way.

Cozying Up The Bedroom

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

Hi, it’s Gabrielle from Savvy Home here again! Days like these are the ones where you just want to crawl up in a ball (or climb in a warm bath) and not move for a week! They are the coldest days of winter. -40 real feel over here. And nothing is better than a cozy room when it’s cold outside.

So crank up the heat, wrap up in your favorite throw blanket, light your favorite candle (mine is a Ralph Lauren Holiday candle – smells like leather, cinnamon and cloves) and find out all about what makes this bedroom by designer Alexa Hampton extra cozy.

As a side note, I’ve actually been in this room last year: it was part of the Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse and let me just say: this room was about 1000x better in person.

1. Trust my words. An upholstered headboard is pure bliss.

2. It’s impossible not to feel cozy in a canopy bed. Traditional or modern. And it adds height to a room.

3. Alexa Hampton pierced the canopy fabric to insert sconces right where you need them: perfect for reading.

4. The bedding is layered: crisp white sheets matched with a fur throw and linen pillows with greek key trim.

5. The gallery wall behind the bedside table adds a sense of history and a layer to the room which feels lived in.

6. This is not your average lacquered walls. It takes about 12 coats to create that lipgloss shine. Celebrity baker Donna Hay talks about the “lickability factor” of icing on a cake, this is the decor equivalent.

7. Who needs 50 shades of grey when you have this perfect creamy warm shade of charcoal?

8. Granted, a silverleafed ceiling is a bit extravagant. But it adds to the cozy luxurious feel of the bedroom.

9. Lots of antiques set in contemporary architecture will give a room a sense of history.

10. The bedside tables and lamp are mismatched, giving a room a more collected look.

What do you think of this room? How did you cozy up your bedroom?
