California Dreaming

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

Good morning!!! I came across these images and a whole lot of memories and fuzzy feelings came back to me. After living in California for a few years while attending university, I came to really love their casual yet sophisticated style.

Airy rooms and soft textures, beaming light and industrial accents are all key features that, to me, define this style. I mean, let’s be serious here for a moment… wouldn’t it be great to sprawl here sipping a mojito?

Let me interject in your delightful style binge for a moment more and point to the fact that this rustic looking settee and armoire  are actually in the master bathroom. What a great idea to add both storage and decorate a vast space… although it wouldn’t be a problem in our bathroom which is the size of a post stamp, but hey it sure is something to look forward to right?

Nuts & Bolts: an industrial home

Monday, March 12th, 2012

I have been told this week that I have a style because someone saw something (decor related of course) and it made them think of me. Hummmm, have I really become so predictable? Should I try to go out on a tangent and surprise you or is “my style” good enough for you all, dear readers?

Well, today I decided to stray… not too far granted, but a little at least. I found this home and I fell in love with its stark white canvas. There is no question about the walls, ceiling, or floor colour here. I usually go for hits of bold colour but I love, just as much, the complete absence (or total presence if we speak in chromatic circles) of anything but white.

Takeaway ideas for me here are the introduction of vintage industrial elements alongside others that are devoid of flourish and sporting modern lines. Examples of that are the claw foot bath in the otherwise unadorned bathroom & the large safe used as an armoire in the living area.

Another one is the light! Did you notice that none of the windows have either drapes or blinds to filter their entering light? That inflow of white light accentuates further the feeling of openness give by the white rooms as well almost serves as “art” onto the bare walls as the colours lying outside the home come pouring in, naturally.

That kind of a home gets me going on a Monday morning, doesn’t it?

ciao ciao & until next time!

An Enchanted Holiday Home

Christmas decorations should enhance your house, not overpower it

In their current issue, Atlanta Homes Magazine presents the Virginia home of Benjie Jones. With an eclectic mix of traditional, rustic, and industrial, with Hollywood Regency accents sprinkled here and there, the house lends itself perfectly to the Holiday whims of the creative designer.

Albert Hadley once said ‘once you hone in on your own aesthetic, everything you buy goes together." - Benjie Jones

“No matter what your aesthetic, Jones stands firm on one thing: Christmas decorations should enhance your house, not overpower it. “You don’t want to take everything out of a room to bring Christmas in. I never have liked the idea of destroying a mantel just to put a wreath on it; just add something to the mantel that makes it Christmas-y. It may be that wreath, but don’t ruin your whole decor to put it there.” – Benjie Jones as interviewed by Atlanta Homes Mag

Put a seasonal touch, however subtle, in every room.

Keep the Holiday cheer to a festive minimum… Editing, after all, is what good design is all about.
