An exotic home: the marriage of bohemian and shabby chic
Friday, February 17th, 2012
When we say that the rule is NO rule… this home is the perfect example. When I first came across these images, I catalogued them in the “bohemian decor” category, until I paid them a closer look.
In a happy mix of eras and styles, this home exudes personality and “joie de vivre“. Nature inspired curtains rub elbows with a pink damask Victorian chair. Elephants bow respectfully in front of an antique sideboard, niched in a receded library otherwise outfitted with very contemporary wooden shelves.
Pieces here find their origins in different countries: from Thailand to India, Morocco and the mall next door… Whatever pleased the homeowners sense of need and aesthetics, found a resting place in this luminous humble abode.

Acrylic chairs, modern and streamlined look polished against the more feminine and exuberant accents.
That kind of home inspires me deeply. If you saw my own house (some of you might have gotten a glimpse of it recently on Buk & Nola’s blog) you would notice that I sing to a somewhat different decor tune when comes time to bring in pieces into my own home… or does it?
On a smaller scale maybe, but on an odd day one can find my Staffordshire dogs hanging out with my comfy couch, my recycled boat wood bench, and my Mid-Century Modern mixed dining chairs. Would a world class designer tell me it “shan’t be done”? Maybe… but I happen to love every single item that made it up the narrow stairs to our home and well… I think they’re all very pretty together. So here you go.
But I am getting off topic here. Although our current home’s sneak peek shows us pieces from far away lands and epochs, there is still a common thread, found within the display of textures, motifs, and colours.

Ousted were the sliding wardrobe doors! These vintage screens make for a beautiful closure system instead.
Crafty contraptions make daily life more fun and exotic in this home and should be a source of inspiration for all of us wanting to add a little pizzazz to our “builder special” cookie cutter homes.
Bits & pieces of romanticism added to a slew of stuffed animals make this little world traveller’s bedroom a safe and dreamy haven.
