A Painter’s Lair: at home with Enrique Garcia Lozano

Friday, May 25th, 2012

Painter Enrique Garcia Lozano puts his money where his mouth is… by living in a gallery style loft, surrounded by his exposed work.

In the vast space of exposed columns, high ceilings and polished concrete floors, the artful display of paintings brings colour and texture to the space; while a mix of Mid Century pieces and vintage finds furnish the loft in a dishevelled yet cohesive whole.

The mezzanine kitchen is where it’s at for me though! The checker board marble floor tiles and table, its mismatched chairs, and stainless steel cabinets give the space a restaurant quality while feeling very cozy niched up high above the living area.

How about this tufted headboard in bright peacock blue velvet? With the colourful swirl pillow and the ox blood red throw, it comes alive and makes a statement in the otherwise stark white bedroom.

“I believe very strongly that when it comes to desire, when it comes to attraction, that things are never black and white, things are very much shades of grey.” – Brian Molko (singer of Placebo)

I couldn’t agree more with this saying, there no half measure about loving grey, no black or  white confusion … only the fusion of the two most basics of basics into what fast became “the new basic”.

Industrial Inspired kitchen: A piece of nature in an otherwise man made space

Loft Living is probably the most obvious application to an all grey décor. Epoxy sealed concrete floors, painted wood panel ceilings, exposed support beams, the canvas seems ideal for all the other intricate details to come into play. What I love most about this particular space, is the complete void of accent colours (beside the 2 that make grey) and the juxtaposition of wooden pieces.

Industrial kitchen: stainless steel, mat grey pantries, and grey velvet

Hard edges are softened with plush fabrics, trinkets are kept to a minimum, and one can see the investment of the owners was put into quality over quantity (no design and decorating experience needed to confirm that).

Industrial Living Room: all the details lie in its simplicity

In pure Scandinavian essence, the meticulous craftsmanship, simplistic elegance, use of natural materials, and the paired down symmetrical lines resulted in a style which became the hallmarks of the style we have come to recognize and emulate.
